What Is a Faction

corerules

A Faction is one or more characters that compose a set of dependent & supportive Families surrounding a place of operations called a Capital, working under a notable or charismatic Leader (or Ruler) for the sake of achieving a shared agenda, represented by a series of Actions achieved after a series of Durations have expired.

Factions may occasionally also have Features just like characters. Features represent exceptional abilities or rules that apply to that Faction and usually relate to the institutional structure of a Faction (e.g. feudal kings vs. mercantile enterprises).

Example

The following is a complete Faction:

  • Myrtle Seedshall (Seedshall Cottage, 0) —Work up the nerve to ask Mausashi to take her to the Academy in the Woods (April 4)
    • Debt to Mausashi for saving her life

Name, Capital & Families (0 means it’s just the Leader), Move, Duration, & a Debt to Mausashi.

Faction Limitations

Leader Limitations

A character can be the Leader of many Factions at one time, but their Factions can only work on a Move if the Leader personally dedicates himself full-time to overseeing the Move.

Therefore, a Leader overseeing multiple Factions without delegation to Subfactions is substantially weaker than one who delegates, & he is likely to invite catastrophe.

A Faction delegated to a Retainer will do nothing without its Leader unless it is wholly granted to that Retainer & made into a permanent Subfaction.

Factions Can’t Have Facts

Factions cannot have Facts. Only their leaders can. They do have Faction Types, which are similar in that they allow specialization of purpose.

Factions Don’t Have Moods

Factions share the Mood of their Leaders.

What If a Faction's Population Hates Its Ruler?

Then it should have a Subfaction representing its angered Families (maybe a Cult of Personality?), with a Leader who hates his Liege. Remember that characters can be part of any number of Factions, so there’s no reason they can’t share most of the same Families! Doing it this way also provides you the mechanical framework for hostilities between the populace & the Leader.
