Campaigns

coregm

A campaign consists of a calendar & a map depicting the world or a region of the world in which the game takes place.

Calendar

A calendar is required in order to keep track of Durations for Actions & for synchronizing Players with the current state of the world.

Ideally, a private/public calendar split should be set up so that the current date is accessible not just by you but also by the Players & so that they can take their own notes.

Aia’s Calendar

This is the calendar in use on Glass.

  • Every year has 360 days, divided evenly into 12 months.
  • Every month has 30 days, separated into 4 weeks.
  • Each week has 7 days, but the 2nd & 4th week of each month ends in the Full Moon Day (15th) and New Moon Day (30th) respectively, neither of which are formally part of the week.
  • The current year is 1002.

Aia Cosmology

Map

The map is the area in which play happens.

Any scale of map is acceptable so long as you have a scale measured in miles. Glass Empires requires no strict hex grid or other elements; measurements, where necessary, are made with a marked straightedge such as a ruler. It is recommended that your map covers a land area at least rivaling that of Hokkaidō, Japan (~50,000 square miles / ~225×225 miles). You may find a 5-mile square or hex grid useful for quickly estimating distances.

Glass Empires mechanically assumes you can mark or identify the following kinds of features:

  • Locations including cities, fortresses, critical strategic production facilities, dungeons, or other notable spots;
  • Roads as lines, ideally including a distinction between paved & unpaved roads.
  • Terrain types, sufficiently distinct enough for the GM(s) to make rulings regarding what areas of the map qualify for which travel costs.

We also assume you can persistently track the location of various mobile parties, such as armies.

Location

A Location is a point on the map representing some kind of feature.

Exceptionally large Locations or exceptionally small campaign maps may require marking of areas or biomes instead of points.

Settlement

A Settlement is Location permanently inhabited by one or more creatures operating a society. At least 1 Family must live at a Location for it to be considered a Settlement.

Resource

A Resource is a Location that, when settled, produces some form of trade goods that can be transported & benefited from elsewhere. They represent production of strategic signifiance (such that actors may want to attack their production bases, trade access, or secure them with additional forces).
