Foresight

PCs are generally assumed to be competent & to also notice a variety of details & niche planning that their players may not have had the time or focus to realize. For this reason, when presented with challenges or obstacles that weren’t explicitly foreseen but that may have potentially come up in off-screen planning or logistical actions, players may assert foresight by stating an action their PC made in advance to deal with the situation & making a Save to determine if their PC was active, wise, or perceptive enough to have done so.

The criteria for foresight is as follows:

  • Doesn’t require knowing anything the PCs had absolutely no way of knowing.
  • Doesn’t require things or events that are absolutely impossible or that contradict anything that’s already been established within the game world.
  • No other PC has attempted to have foresight over this specific obstacle.

You may receive a penalty on your Save depending on how complex & unlikely the action you want to take was, which fills in for the ordinary situational penalties a GM may apply on a case-by-case basis:

  • No penalty: Ordinary action which you had ample opportunity to perform.
    • Was the action trivial to perform?
    • If it wasn’t trivial to perform, was it at least cheap & the benefits foreseeable?
  • -2 penalty: Complex action or unlikely opportunities.
    • Did it require a specific, hard-to-foresee detail?
    • Was it expensive, time-consuming, or complex for the character?
    • Would it have required a decent reason to happen at the time (which you may still provide to the GM)?
  • -4 penalty: Requires specialized skills your character does not prominently possess, or particularly unlikely preparation.
    • Was the plan extraordinary & required you to take unique action?
    • Does the GM judge that it would have been fairly unlikely to have foreseen the problem?
    • Did you require outside help or information you didn’t have, or questionable legality?

Automatic failure: The GM may rule that foresight is completely impossible if:

  • The action was impossible without knowing specific facts the PC had no chance of knowing.
  • The challenge you’re trying to solve is specifically unforeseeable.
  • There was no realistic opportunity for the PC to have prepared for this.

Foresight Saves get a +2 bonus if the PC has a relevant Fact.
